Men who drink four or more 4-ounce glasses of red wine per week were found in a recent study to have a 50% lower risk of prostate cancer, and a 60% lower risk of the most aggressive form of that cancer. White wine, beer and liquor did not appear to offer similar protection. This led researchers to speculate that the protective effect of red wine was due to the antioxidant resveratrol, which is abundant in the skins of red grapes.
The study, which involved over 1,400 patients, was conducted by Janet L. Stanford, Ph.D., and colleagues in Fred Hutchinson's Cancer Research Center and was published online in The International Journal of Cancer. Be aware that one theorized mechanism of action is that the resveratrol may act as an estrogen, reducing levels of the male hormones including testosterone, thought to contribute to prostate tumor growth.
